  Our Mission

Welcome to the Save Our Landmarks website!

Save Our Landmarks was a group of concerned citizens that included architects, real estate investors, film professionals, historians, artists, preservationists, and business leaders that rallied together in 2006 because we were concerned about the fate of the River Oaks Shopping Center (1937), the River Oaks Theatre (1939), the Alabama Theatre/Bookstop (1939), and the Alabama Shopping Center (1940).  We accomplished our goal of having the city of Houston designate all 4 sites as landmarks:

  1. Designation of Alabama Theatre and Shopping Center
  2. Designation of River Oaks Theatre and Shopping Center
However, in spite of being officially designated City Landmarks by the Houston City Council who followed recommendations made by the Houston Planning Commission and the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission (HAHC), property owner Weingarten Realty Inc. tore down a portion of the River Oaks Shopping Center in 2007 for remodeling and building a big box Barnes and Noble bookstore and plans further redevelopment which threatens all of these historic Art Deco landmarks with demolition or at least remodeling that will be incongruous with the historic nature of the sites.

We want to these and other SAVE OUR LANDMARKS and need your help in this very important and historic endeavor.  Save Our Landmarks dissolved in 2007 since our mission was accomplished, but please keep an eye out for Houston’s very first citizen-oriented preservation website that is scheduled to go online in 2010 at www.houstonpreservation.com.  This site is being developed by HAHC’s Education sub-committee and we are so pleased that the City is taking the initiative to bring preservation to the Houston community at large.  Sign up to receive Houston’s CitizensNet emails and you’ll receive a notice about this exciting new website.

Thank you for stopping by and for helping SAVE OUR LANDMARKS!
